Unit 2: Solving Equations
Lesson 2.6: How Do We Work with Ratios, Rates, and Conversions?
A Ratio is a comparison of two numbers.
Let's return to our pizza party example. If you bought three pizzas
to share with 8 people (including yourself),
you could compare the number of pizzas to the number of people.
3 pizzas : 8 people
3 pizzas : 8 people
A Rate is a ratio with two different units.
Your heart rate is the number of times your heart beats
compared to the time it takes to beat.
It is an essential variable in exercise and keeping fit.
The rate at which we will be looking very closely this year is velocity,
or the ratio of distance to time.
Consider the following students, Julia and Bobby.

Way to go, Julia!!
What is Julia's speed in miles per hour?
How long will it take her at this rate to run 2 miles? 5 miles? 26.2 miles?
How much longer will it take Bobby to run 26.2 miles?
