Let's define our universal set as all Palo Alto High School students.
Let's look more closely at two subsets of people:
Those who play soccer and those who run cross country.
We will call the subset of soccer players A
and the subset of cross country runners B.
Let's look more closely at two subsets of people:
Those who play soccer and those who run cross country.
We will call the subset of soccer players A
and the subset of cross country runners B.
The union of these two subsets would include everyone that plays soccer
and everyone that runs cross country:

The intersection of these two sets would be just the people that both play soccer and run cross country:
